History :: ADR For a New Generation
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) has established itself as process of choice for international commercial disputes. For the last 20+ years the Willem C. Vis Moot Competition, the international moot court for commercial arbitration, has attracted up to 2500 students to come to Vienna every year to practice their arbitration skills and compete against other universities on an international level.
Following the footsteps of this success, Vienna is again reacting to the fast paced world of ADR and is setting the trend for a new generation of dispute resolution. The rise of Consensual Dispute Resolution (CDR) processes such as mediation and negotiation mark a new era of party driven dispute handling and will play a critical role in the dispute resolution field of the future. The International Bar Association, the Vienna International Arbitral Centre and the European Law Student’s Association have thus joined forces to establish an international student competition for Consensual Dispute Resolution – the CDRC Vienna.
The Competition :: Negotiators meet Mediators
The competition simulates legal negotiations with the support of a mediator. Students compete against each other by negotiating a series of real world legal problems based on the case of the Willem C. Vis Moot. The competition is focused on the students’ ability to utilize negotiation and mediation skills and strategies to successfully negotiate or mediate a settlement that best serves the needs of the parties. The simulation consists of a common set of facts known by all participants and confidential information known only to the participants representing a particular side. The competitors will be evaluated and provided feedback by skilled mediation and negotiation experts.
