Transferring data out of the European Union

The conference shall address the transfer of data under the General Data Protection Regulation from the European Union to third states such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, and the United States of America.

In particular, the challenge of striking a balance between security interests and privacy protection as reflected in the European and American regulatory systems.  It also will examine closely the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) relating to data protection in general and to international data transfers in particular.  The conference will seek to encourage the pragmatic evolution of rules on international data transfers from the EU, while respecting relevant fundamental rights guarantees.

Three panels shall address different aspects. The 1st panel shall discuss the balancing of security interests with privacy protection. The 2nd panel shall deal with different regulatory frameworks governing data transfer (especially in the EU and in the US). The 3rd panel will focus on the general case-law of the CJEU on data transfer.
